The wrong way

With newspaper.

The right way

Lay some kindling and put a fire-lighter on this with more kindling on top.
The air vent should be open.

Once the kindling is burning well, add large pieces of wood.
Once the logs are burning, the air vent can be closed.

To light the fire the next day, place the kindling on an ashes which remain and proceed as above.
