River walk above Rocchetta Nervina, Liguria

The sea is not the only place to swim in Liguria: there are gin-clear rivers in the mountains.


One of our favourite outings is to Rocchetta Nervina, 50 km (an hour's drive) away,

Location:

• Motorway to Bordighera
• Take the road north through the town of Dolceaqua
• Then left to Rocchetta

The walk

Park at the beginning of the village and walk over the bridge into the old quarter. There turn left to go out of the village, following the path along the hill-side high above the river, going upstream.

After about 45 minutes you come to this old ruin on the left of the path. Three minutes later the path forks: take the left-hand way down towards the river.

Destination: Ponte Cin

And you come straight to the clear water. Immediately below the bridge is this long, 4 m deep pool.
