Swimming
The coast has many attractive places to swim – some with sand, some pebbles, some rocks.Spiaggia D'Oro in Porto Maurizio (picture right) is a wide sand beach, protected by the long harbour mole. It offers many attractions: wonderful sand, sometimes great waves, warm temperatures even early in the year, play areas for children and many bars and cafés.
In the summer, as well as the pay-beaches, part of this beach is a spiaggia libera where you pay nothing and still have access to the entire water area.
When the waves are high, this is where the Surfers come.
One of our favourite swimming places is even closer: Borgo Foce (the two pictures right), under the picturesque Parasio.
Just 3,5 km from the house, this small bay has protected water where even small children can play in safety.
We usually lie on the rocks of the mole. Those who want more comfort can hire a sun-bed at the beach bar.
Borgo Foce is a free beach.
Snorkeling
It is always worth swimming with a snorkel and mask: shoals of brightly coloured fish are swimming everywhere. In the bay opening of Borgo Foce I saw a 35 cm long gilt-head bream on several days in the summer of 2007.
We also often see barracuda (do not worry, in spite of their name they are harmless), garfish und large shoals of anchovies swimming here. There are also octopi to be seen between the rocks.
